About Friends of Jackson Park

We believe open space strengthens communities and support the development of additional open space near Jackson Park.

Our Efforts

The mission of Friends of Jackson Park is forward-thinking: to foster community support and advocate for a renovated, well-maintained, and vibrant Jackson Park that will serve as a fun and safe place for children and adults to enjoy for generations to come. We believe open space strengthens communities and supports the development of additional open space near Jackson Park. We are dedicated to working with the Potrero Hill neighborhood, the surrounding neighborhoods, city agencies, private organizations, and all users of the park to create an attractive environment for play.

Jackson Playground, dubbed “the largest and most beautiful playground this side of Chicago” in a November 1912 issue of The San Francisco Call, is a historic treasure that has been providing a mixed-use oasis to the residents of Potrero Hill for over 100 years. Jackson Park has been a historic community hub for recreation and relaxation in San Francisco since 1912 and it continues to serve a diverse group of San Franciscans from all over the city. Possessing two of the only nine lit fields within the City, our ball fields absorb heavy usage year round; nighttime adult leagues as well as elementary, middle and high school boys and girls teams practice and play at Jackson Park. The clubhouse at Jackson Park, in spite of its fatigued condition, houses a heavily sought after after-school program. Additional programming at the park includes: toddler programs for new families; alternative recreation programs; seasonal arts; summer sports camps; and corporate team building events. Jackson Park is central to healthy, happy living and playful community building for San Francisco.
In 2013, a group of parents formed the Friends of Jackson Playground (FOJP) over a shared interest in making the park safer. In 2018, the organization officially changed their name to Friends of Jackson Park when they were approved as a non-profit corporation. We're ready for action!

Funding Secured: $4.5MM in pledges from neighborhood developers, $1.64MM from the Eastern Neighborhood Citizens Advisory Committee.
Clubhouse HRE Approval: Final HRE (Historical Research Evaluation) was approved by the Historic Preservation Staff in the spring of 2017.
Design Plans: After considerable community input and workshopping, Fletcher Studio and Jackson Liles Architecture have designed an ingenious project that creates new open space and also allows more efficient use of the current recreational fields and playgrounds.
Political Support: Our current D10 Supervisor Malia Cohen approves and supports this project. All D10 Supervisor candidates have expressed support as well.
FOJP Non-Profit Formed: FoJP received their IRS determination letter in Aug. 2018

Our future goals are to get the support of our community and city leaders for this project to ensure the Jackson Park renovations are included in the next Parks Bond. Once included in the bond, we will work with the SF Rec and Park and other groups supporting the bond to lock up the support necessary to approve the Park Bond. In parallel with the above efforts, we will continue our fundraising initiatives.
